This month marks another year in the life of Jabulani, a bull whose story is deeply woven into the heart of Jabulani Safari, and into the lives of every elephant and person who has walked this path alongside him. His life is a testament to resilience, to the power of connection, and to the extraordinary capacity of elephants to adapt and care for one another.

The Beginning of It All

Jabulani’s story began in 1997, when he was rescued as a young calf, just a few months old. Injured, exhausted, and alone, he had been trapped in a mud pit, likely after his herd had tried desperately to save him. His little life hung in the balance, but he was discovered in time and taken into the care of Lente Roode, who nurtured and rehabilitated him with remarkable patience and dedication. He thrived under the love and attention of his human family, learning to trust again, but even as he grew strong and healthy, he faced a future without a herd.

Multiple attempts to introduce him to wild elephants were met with rejection. It is the natural order of elephants, family bonds are everything, and outsiders are rarely welcomed. For a young bull like Jabulani, full of curiosity and energy, the world remained a place of uncertainty, caught between the human world he knew and the elephant world he longed to join.

A Herd Finds Him

In 2002, everything changed. A group of orphaned elephants from Zimbabwe were in urgent need of rescue during the country’s land reformation process. Many had already lost their families and were at risk of culling. Within days, these elephants were transported across the border to South Africa, accompanied by their carers.

Among them was Tokwe, a wise and nurturing matriarch who would play a pivotal role in Jabulani’s story. When the time came to introduce him to this new herd, there were no guarantees. Previous attempts with wild herds had shown just how unpredictable and dangerous these moments could be. But this time, Tokwe approached him with calm curiosity and, in a moment that would shape the future of the herd, gently placed her trunk into his mouth.

It was acceptance, not because of blood ties, but because of shared experience, understanding, and the quiet instinct to care for another in need. From that moment, the blended Jabulani herd was formed, a family not bound by birth, but by circumstance, empathy, and resilience.

A Different Kind of Family

What followed was something rare and extraordinary. This herd, made up of elephants from different backgrounds and experiences, learned to function as a true family. Bonds were formed through shared lives and shared care, rather than through lineage. Tokwe herself had never raised a calf before Jabulani, yet she stepped into the role with instinct and quiet confidence. The other elephants, many of whom had endured loss and trauma, supported her, creating a safe and nurturing environment for Jabulani to grow.

Today, he towers over Tokwe, a reminder of how far he has come, but the memory of the tiny calf who once stood around her legs is never far from our minds. The herd’s unique structure has since allowed them to welcome other orphaned elephants, creating a pattern of care and acceptance that continues to this day.

Coming Full Circle

Years later, Jabulani now finds himself on the other side of the story. Where he once stood as the newcomer, unsure and searching for connection, he is now often the first to step forward when a new orphan arrives. There is a gentleness in the way he approaches them, a familiarity that can only come from having walked the path himself. When elephants like Khanyisa, Timisa, and Kumbura began their own journeys of healing, Jabulani was there, offering reassurance in quiet touches, in calm presence, and in the simple act of standing alongside them. His guidance eases the new arrivals into the herd, helping them feel safe and part of something bigger than themselves. It is in these moments that his story comes full circle, as the once orphaned calf becomes a figure of support, patience, and reassurance for the next generation.
