For the month of May, we’ve been contemplating motherhood… how it shows up in our lives and in the animal kingdom. Our hearts have warmed with the thoughts and memories of the love, strength and support that we’ve felt as mothers or from mothers, and that we’ve witnessed in the wild.

Our team have put their heads and hearts together to share with you what motherhood means to them – take a look below for a word from our grooms, our rangers and our chefs.

“Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers! We celebrate mothers everyday – those special people whose actions speak louder than their words, whose love is ever-lasting and beyond imagination. This world is nothing without mothers! We always acknowledge the beauty of motherhood in our animals and especially our elephants, Tokwe, Lundi, Setombe and Bubi – the most wonderful mothers and the best thing to ever have happened to our Jabulani Herd. We salute and respect mothers forever as we feel their love within our hearts.” – The Jabulani elephant herd team

Motherhood for me is the purest form of love and dedication. In both humans and animals, a mom will always protect her offspring. Her young always comes first. A mother would sacrifice anything to give her children the best.” – Ruan, Ranger

The meaning of being a mother is virtually endless. A mother is a protector, disciplinarian and friend. A mother is a selfless, loving human who must sacrifice many of her wants and needs for the wants and needs of her children. A mother works hard to make sure her child is equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities to make them a capable human being.” – Zandrie, Pastry Chef

Motherhood to me is one of the most selfless acts one can go through, sacrificing time and having the patience to give all your love and care to a single individual, being a pillar of strength, guidance and safety at any moment.” – Jase, Ranger

“If any of us know what love is, it is because of our mothers!” – Stefan, GM

“I think we have so much to learn about motherhood from animals. If you look at the Animal Kingdom it is just absolutely fascinating how all of them differ when it comes to motherhood. What I find most admirable is that even when the little ones don’t yet completely fathom the dangers of the wild, the Mommies always lookout for them and are always ready to sacrifice themselves for their youngsters.” – Liesa, Ranger

“A mother is the future of her past. She teaches us the finer details and gives her all no matter what.” – Alex, Head Chef

“Motherhood for me is about a woman passing on the knowledge that she has gained over her life to her babies so to give them the best chance at navigating their own lives.” – Dean, Ranger

“There’s no one stronger, wiser or more dedicated than a mother. A mother is unconditional love, security and a best friend.” – Julia, Front Office

“Motherhood is the information pole that provides direction and advice whenever you need it most. A mother is both the best friend and fiercest protector you could ever ask for.” – Andre, Ranger
