Following great demand for kosher cuisine from visiting safari guests, Jabulani lodge in the Kapama Private Game Reserve has launched a kosher kitchen to better cater to Jewish diners, and provide food that is prepared according to Jewish kosher dietary laws.
The Relais & Châteaux Jabulani lodge has dedicated space to two kitchens strictly for kosher food, with one side for dairy (Milchik) only and the other for meat (Fleischik) only. Each kitchen is fully equipped with brand new well- labelled equipment, including plates, cutlery, and tableware.
Jabulani Executive Chef, Alex and his team manage the running of the kitchens. Guests are able to bring their own kosher chef to the lodge, should they wish, to work alongside the Jabulani chefs in creating some of the finest South African kosher meals imagined. Jabulani sources top local kosher products, including biltong, a variety of meats, fresh produce, and chocolate.
Jabulani is able to provide a Mashgiach where needed. Alternatively, guests are welcome to bring their own Mashgiach to the lodge. The kitchen is approved by the visiting Mashgiach or the head of the family staying at the lodge to ensure that it remains up to kosher standards.
This new addition to Jabulani acknowledges the importance of catering to the needs of travellers and aims to create a comfortable, personalised safariexperience in a welcoming environment.
Jabulani is able to source Chalav Stamm dairy items almost without issues. Chalav Yisrael is severely limited, with only a handful of suppliers offering this, and as such, Jabulani would require at least 30 days’ notice to arrange for an order of this ingredient. Mehadrin Commission (Glatt) meat is also available with advanced notice.
Jabulani is generally able to source Mevushal (boiled and pasteurised) Kosherwine through local suppliers, such as Cape Jewel and Backsberg, who have kosher lines in their wine production. Non-Mevushal is more difficult to comeby. These wines do not form part of the package inclusions and are billed onconsumption, as part of the premium drinks exclusions policy.
