Reignite Your Spirit with Yoga and Stillness in the Bush | International Yoga Day
by Jade
21 June marks the 11th International Day of Yoga, a global observance introduced by the United Nations to recognise the ancient practice of yoga and its ongoing relevance to physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Originating in India, yoga is a discipline that goes beyond postures and breathing techniques. It is a way of life that promotes self-awareness, inner peace and unity with nature.
This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” reminds us of an important truth: our personal well-being and the health of our planet are closely linked. We nourish our own bodies and brains by living mindfully and intentionally, but we also become more conscious custodians of the natural world. As we find balance and calmness within ourselves, we are inspired to extend that same harmony outward, to the world we inhabit.
At Jabulani, this philosophy is deeply felt and practised, not only on International Yoga Day, but throughout the year.

A Safari of the Self
Jabulani is not only a sanctuary for wildlife and a home for a remarkable herd of rescued elephants, it is also a restorative space for people. Nestled in a private reserve in the South African bushveld, our setting naturally invites reflection, connection and healing. The rhythm of the wild slows the mind. The presence of elephants grounds the heart. The stillness of the bushveld becomes a mirror for our soul.
We offer transformative wellness retreats guided by skilled life coach and yoga teacher, Denise Sohandev, who has helped many guests rediscover purpose and clarity in the quiet embrace of nature. Through daily yoga sessions, meditative bush walks, silent safaris and guided self-inquiry, the retreats foster both inward exploration and a profound sense of outward belonging.
Guests practise yoga under the open sky, with birdsong in the background and elephants not far from view. Each breath in the fresh air feels restorative. Each movement mirrors the grace of the wild. Whether standing in tree pose beneath actual trees or sitting in stillness during sunrise, our guests often describe the experience as nothing short of life-changing.

Nature as a Teacher
The International Day of Yoga is a reminder that wellness does not begin and end on the yoga mat. It is present in the way we walk, speak, rest and reconnect with what matters. In the bush, this wisdom is made visible. We see it in the way animals move instinctively, live honestly and adapt without resistance. Guests are encouraged to observe these natural rhythms and embrace their own cycles of rest, release and renewal.
One of the most powerful elements of the retreat is the silent safari. It is an experience that strips away distractions and invites participants to tune into the quiet both around and within them. With no need to speak, to perform or to please, guests are given the rare gift of simply being. It is in this space that many find themselves returning to a more authentic version of who they are.

Yoga as a Global Movement, and a Personal Journey
Since its adoption in 2014 by the United Nations, International Yoga Day has served to highlight not only the individual benefits of yoga but also its global relevance. In a world facing increasing mental health challenges, environmental pressures and social disconnection, the simple yet profound practices of yoga can offer a way back. Back to balance, back to compassion, back to unity.
At Jabulani, we honour this day as an invitation to slow down, to connect with ourselves and each other, and to remember our place within the greater web of life. Whether on a yoga mat, a game drive vehicle or a quiet trail through the bush, we are reminded that wellness is always within reach when we choose presence, simplicity and connection.
Join us for a wellness journey in the wild. Rediscover your breath, your purpose and your joy in nature’s most powerful classroom.
