Building a mud bath for the orphaned rhinos

Many of our guests have a love for animals and the natural environment, and many of them wish to visit the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC), our sister property.

HESC has established itself as one of the leading private research and breeding facilities for endangered species in the country. The Pioneers for Change Programme was created for guests who want to learn what it takes to take care of the orphaned and endangered species at the centre.

Feeding time for the animals

Pioneers will assist in the butchery and in the preparation of food for the wild dogs, vultures and cheetahs at the centre. They will help to feed the animals at the centre, and to clear their enclosures. They will also get the opportunity to visit the animal hospital, and to meet with HESC’s resident vet. He will discuss with them any particular cases of interest, and the general challenges faced by HESC when it comes to rehabilitating orphaned and injured animals that arrive at the centre.

Philippa the rhino’s treatment procedure

This programme is a highly rewarding experience for those who understand the importance of conservation and believe that every small act can make a huge difference.
