Every year on World Snake Day, we celebrate an animal that is more often feared than admired.

For many people, snakes are associated with danger. Stories, myths, and films have painted them as creatures to avoid, yet the reality is far more fascinating. Snakes have existed for over 100 million years, long before humans walked the Earth, and today they play an essential role in maintaining healthy ecosystems across the globe.

The more we learn about snakes, the more we realise just how remarkable they truly are.

More Than Meets the Eye

At first glance, a snake may appear deceptively simple. It has no legs, no eyelids, and no external ears, yet it is perfectly adapted to its environment.

Most snakes have between 200 and 400 vertebrae, compared with the 33 found in humans. This extraordinary skeletal structure allows them to move with incredible flexibility while still providing strength and support. Every movement, whether climbing a tree, swimming through water, or gliding across the ground, is the result of hundreds of muscles working together.

Without legs, snakes have evolved several different ways of moving. Some use the familiar side-to-side motion known as lateral undulation, while others move in a straight line by lifting and pulling sections of their belly scales forward, a technique often used by larger species such as pythons.

Cold-Blooded, But Perfectly Adapted

Being cold-blooded, or more accurately ectothermic, means snakes rely on the warmth of their surroundings to regulate their body temperature. Rather than producing their own body heat like mammals, they move between sunny and shaded areas throughout the day to stay at an optimal temperature.

This energy-efficient lifestyle allows snakes to survive on far less food than many other predators, making them remarkably well adapted to a wide range of environments, from deserts and forests to mountains and wetlands.

Eyes That Never Blink

Have you ever noticed that snakes never seem to blink?

That’s because they don’t have eyelids. Instead, each eye is protected by a transparent scale called a spectacle, which acts like a built-in contact lens. As a snake sheds its skin, this protective covering is shed too, leaving behind a fresh, clear layer underneath.

They Don’t Hear the Way We Do

One of the most common misconceptions about snakes is that they are deaf.

While they cannot hear airborne sounds in the same way humans can, snakes are highly sensitive to vibrations. They detect movement through the ground using their lower jaw, allowing them to sense approaching animals long before they come into view.

Their forked tongue serves another remarkable purpose. Every flick collects tiny scent particles from the air and ground, which are delivered to the Jacobson’s organ in the roof of the mouth. This allows snakes to “taste” the air, helping them locate prey, identify potential mates, and navigate their surroundings with remarkable precision.

Every Pattern Has a Purpose

The incredible colours and patterns found on snakes aren’t just beautiful, they’re practical.

Many species rely on camouflage to remain almost invisible amongst leaves, rocks, or grass, helping them avoid predators as much as helping them catch prey. Others use bold colours or distinctive markings as a warning to potential threats that they may be venomous.

Some harmless snakes have even evolved to mimic the appearance of venomous species, a clever survival strategy known as Batesian mimicry.

Masters of Patience

Unlike many predators that rely on speed or endurance, snakes are experts in energy conservation.

A snake may remain perfectly still for hours, or even days, waiting for the right opportunity. Some species ambush their prey, while others actively hunt, but all have evolved to use as little energy as possible.

This efficiency also means snakes do not need to eat nearly as often as many people imagine. Depending on the species and the size of the meal, a snake can go weeks or even months between feeds.

Venom Isn’t What Most People Think

Venom is often viewed purely as a weapon, but for snakes it is primarily a tool for survival.

Different species have evolved different types of venom, each designed to help them capture prey efficiently. Some venoms affect the nervous system, while others break down tissue or interfere with blood clotting.

Importantly, venom is costly for snakes to produce. They don’t waste it unnecessarily, which is why most venomous snakes would rather avoid confrontation than bite.

Built to Survive

Snakes have survived on Earth for well over 100 million years, outliving the dinosaurs and adapting to almost every continent except Antarctica.

Today there are more than 4,000 recognised snake species worldwide, ranging from tiny thread snakes no thicker than a piece of spaghetti to enormous pythons that can exceed five metres in length.

Their ability to adapt to such a wide variety of habitats is one of the reasons they continue to thrive today.

More Helpful Than Harmful

Although venomous snakes often receive the most attention, they make up only a small proportion of the world’s snake species.

The vast majority of snakes are completely harmless to people and would rather avoid us altogether. When they do encounter humans, their first instinct is almost always to escape.

Nature’s Pest Control

Without snakes, many ecosystems would look very different.

Rodents reproduce incredibly quickly and, left unchecked, can damage vegetation, spread disease, and affect populations of other wildlife. Snakes help keep these numbers in balance, making them one of nature’s most effective forms of pest control.

In turn, snakes are also an important food source for a variety of predators, including secretary birds, martial eagles, honey badgers, mongooses, and even other snakes. They occupy a vital place in the food web, acting as both predator and prey.

Shedding More Than Skin

One of the most fascinating aspects of a snake’s life is the process of shedding.

As snakes grow, their outer layer of skin becomes too tight and is replaced with a new one beneath. Before shedding, many species develop cloudy, blue-grey eyes as fluid builds between the old and new layers of skin. Once ready, the snake rubs against rough surfaces until the old skin peels away, often coming off in one complete piece.

Far from being unusual, this process is simply another example of nature’s remarkable ability to renew itself.

The Black Mamba Isn’t Actually Black

Despite its intimidating reputation, the black mamba is named after the dark inky colour inside its mouth, not the colour of its scales. In reality, these snakes are usually olive-grey or brown.

Pythons Don’t Dislocate Their Jaws

One of the biggest myths about snakes is that they dislocate their jaws to swallow large prey.

They don’t.

Instead, each side of the lower jaw moves independently, connected by flexible ligaments that allow the snake to gradually “walk” its mouth over its meal.

Southern African Python

Africa’s largest snake is non-venomous and relies on constriction to subdue its prey. Although impressive in size, pythons are generally shy and are an important part of the ecosystem.

Puff Adder

Perhaps the most commonly encountered venomous snake in the region, the puff adder relies on camouflage rather than speed to avoid detection. It is responsible for many snakebite incidents, largely because people accidentally step too close without noticing it.

Mozambique Spitting Cobra

One of the more recognisable snakes found in the Lowveld, this cobra is best known for its ability to accurately spit venom towards the eyes of a potential threat from several metres away. Like most snakes, however, it would much rather retreat than confront.

Boomslang

Often described as one of Africa’s most beautiful snakes, the boomslang spends much of its life in trees. Its large eyes provide excellent vision for hunting birds, lizards, and chameleons.

Herald Snake

Frequently mistaken for a venomous cobra because of its defensive posture, the herald snake is mildly venomous to its prey but poses little danger to humans. It is a common visitor to gardens and lodges where frogs are plentiful.

Brown House Snake

One of the friendliest snakes you’re likely to encounter, the brown house snake is completely non-venomous and feeds mainly on rodents and geckos. They are often welcomed around homes and lodges because they naturally help control pests.

Rinkhals

Often mistaken for a true cobra, the rinkhals is actually a distinct species known for its unusual defence display, flattening its neck into a hood and, in some cases, feigning death when threatened. It is also one of the few African snakes capable of spitting venom.

Vine Snake (Twig Snake)

With its slender body and pointed snout, the vine snake is a master of camouflage, blending in almost perfectly with the branches and twigs it rests among. It is rear-fanged and rarely poses a threat unless handled.

Despite their reputation in some parts of the world, snakes have also been symbols of wisdom, healing, renewal, and protection for thousands of years.

The Rod of Asclepius, the internationally recognised symbol of medicine, features a single snake coiled around a staff, representing healing and renewal. Ancient Egyptians associated cobras with protection and royalty, while in many African cultures snakes are respected as symbols of fertility, rain, wisdom, or ancestral connection, depending on local traditions.

Across many belief systems, the act of shedding skin has become a powerful symbol of transformation, resilience, and new beginnings.

Learning to Appreciate Them

Seeing a snake in the wild is often a privilege rather than a cause for concern.

Like elephants, lions, leopards, and countless other species, snakes are an essential part of Africa’s remarkable biodiversity. They help keep ecosystems balanced, control rodent populations, and contribute to the health of the landscapes we love to explore.

The best thing to do if you encounter a snake is exactly what it hopes you’ll do too: keep a respectful distance, allow it an escape route, and appreciate the opportunity to observe one of nature’s most perfectly adapted animals.

Perhaps on this World Snake Day, we can replace a little fear with curiosity. Because the more we understand these remarkable reptiles, the easier it becomes to appreciate the important role they play in the wild.
