Nelson Mandela believed that no child should be denied the opportunity to learn because of circumstances beyond their control.

Yet for many children, education starts with something much simpler than books, uniforms or classrooms.

It starts with a meal.

At Jabulani Safari, Mandela Day is a time to reflect on the impact that small acts of compassion can have when they are sustained over many years. One of the initiatives closest to our hearts is the Nkosi Bars Programme, a project dedicated to ensuring that school children in our neighboring communities receive a nutritious meal every school day.

What began as a simple commitment to support local learners has grown into a long-term investment in children’s health, wellbeing and education.

Between 2022 and June 2026, Jabulani Safari and HERD have collectively provided 118,400 nutritious meals through the Nkosi Bars Program, representing an investment of more than R1 million (R1,032,815).

Behind these numbers are thousands of children arriving at school with a better chance to focus, learn and thrive.

Over the years, the program has continued to expand:

• 2022: 18,700 meals provided to 165 Grade R learners
• 2023: 38,200 meals provided to 170 Grade R and 170 Grade 1 learners
• 2024: 21,900 meals provided to 161 Grade R and 143 Grade 1 learners
• 2025: 25,600 meals provided to 187 Grade R and 154 Grade 1 learners
• 2026 (January – June): Already 14,000 meals provided to 239 Grade R and 209 Grade 1 learners

What is particularly encouraging is the growth in the number of children reached. In just four years, the program has expanded from supporting 165 learners to supporting 448 young children across Grade R and Grade 1 classes in 2026 alone.

For many children, the Nkosi Bar may seem like a simple snack.

In reality, it is much more.

It is nourishment that helps a child concentrate during lessons. It is energy for a busy morning of learning and play. It is reassurance for teachers and parents who know that every child will receive something nutritious during the school day.

Most importantly, it is a reminder that their future matters.

As a luxury safari lodge, our purpose extends beyond creating exceptional guest experiences. We believe that we have a responsibility to contribute positively to the communities that surround us. Supporting education is one of the most meaningful ways we can do that.

The Nkosi Bars Program reflects a simple but powerful belief: when we invest in children, we invest in the future.

Every box delivered represents an opportunity. Every meal served supports a young learner’s ability to engage, participate and build the foundation for a brighter tomorrow.

Mandela taught us that the true measure of a society is how it treats its most vulnerable members.

Children are at the heart of that responsibility.

As we celebrate Mandela Day, we recognize that meaningful change is not created through a single day’s effort. It is built through consistent action, year after year, child after child.

The Nkosi Bars Program has now delivered more than 118,000 meals, but the real impact cannot be measured in numbers alone. Its value lies in the confidence of a child who can focus in class, the relief of a parent who knows their child will receive nourishment at school, and the hope created when a community comes together to invest in the next generation.
